Ethereum Deploys Glamsterdam Upgrade to Sepolia Testnet

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade arrived on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, initiating a critical public trial for the network’s 2026 scaling roadmap. The deployment shifts focus toward testing a 200 million gas limit and architectural changes intended to overhaul how blocks are constructed, validated, and processed.

The Sepolia activation, confirmed by community contributor Pooja Ranjan at 1:53 p.m. UTC, marks a transition from controlled development environments to a public arena. Node operators updated their execution and consensus clients ahead of the fork to facilitate the integration of 18 core and seven supporting Ethereum Improvement Proposals. Central to this phase is the 200 million gas limit, a significant increase from the previous 60 million standard, designed to assess whether validators can handle heavier workloads without compromising network stability.

Technically, the upgrade introduces enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs). By separating consensus validation from execution, ePBS provides validators more time to handle payloads, while BALs allow clients to identify required state data in advance. This shift enables parallel execution, moving the network away from its traditional sequential processing model. Additionally, EIP 8037 modifies gas accounting for state creation, a change that may necessitate updates for wallets and tools relying on legacy gas assumptions. Developers will monitor these performance metrics on Sepolia to determine the schedule for the subsequent Hoodi testnet stage and the eventual mainnet activation.
