Ethereum Researcher Urges 'Bunker Mode' Amid AI Cryptography Fears

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has called on the blockchain industry to initiate a controlled migration of digital assets to fresh addresses. Citing rapid advancements in AI-assisted mathematics, Drake warns that existing cryptographic standards like ECDSA could face unprecedented threats from classical computing clusters well before quantum hardware matures.

Ethereum Researcher Urges 'Bunker Mode' Amid AI Cryptography Fears

Drake’s proposal, labeled as "bunker mode," suggests moving funds to addresses where public keys remain hidden behind a hash. While he emphasized that no active exploit against ECDSA has been demonstrated, he cautioned that the window for such risks could be measured in months rather than years. The recommendation specifically targets large holders and institutions, urging them to act calmly to avoid the inherent risks of rushed, manual migrations.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, acknowledged the validity of concerns regarding AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs but cautioned against panic. Buterin advised against scrambling to move funds, noting that poorly executed migrations often result in greater losses than the theoretical risks they aim to mitigate. He favors a shift toward hash-based designs where possible and advocates for more conservative cryptographic parameters.

Currently, the Ethereum Foundation’s Post-Quantum Security team is working on long-term infrastructure, including hash-based signatures and the EIP-8141 proposal, which aims to allow account authentication rotation by 2027. Meanwhile, external trackers like Project Eleven have identified millions of Bitcoin addresses with exposed public keys, further highlighting the industry's vulnerability to future algorithmic shortcuts. Drake is set to discuss these security roadmaps at the Ethereum Institutional Forum in London on November 12.
