The USFP marks a departure from traditional design, delivering four times the bandwidth density and 1.3 times the power efficiency of previous generations. Initial transceivers feature 16 full-duplex lanes, with a roadmap to scale to 32 or more lanes as data requirements grow. According to Bill Gartner, general manager of optical systems and optics at Cisco, reaching 400Gb/s per lane required a fundamental shift rather than incremental updates to existing hardware.
To ensure the technology gains industry traction, the companies are partnering with Amphenol and TE Connectivity to establish a broader ecosystem. The collaboration aims to develop an open industry specification, balancing the need for higher performance with the deployment flexibility that pluggable optics provide to data centers.
