Treasury Yields Retreat Ahead of Crucial Inflation Print

With U.S. markets resuming trade after the Columbus Day holiday, Treasury yields softened across the curve on Tuesday. The 10-year note dipped 4.4 basis points to 5.199%, retreating from the 24-year peaks set last week as a cooling in oil prices provided a reprieve for fixed-income investors.

Treasury Yields Retreat Ahead of Crucial Inflation Print

Investors are now bracing for Wednesday’s September consumer price index release, a vital indicator for Federal Reserve policy. While analysts polled by The Wall Street Journal project headline inflation to climb to 3.6% from 3.4% in August, few expect this acceleration to force the central bank's hand at the October 28 meeting. Market pricing currently reflects only a 19% probability of a rate hike this month, suggesting that the recent volatility in bond markets may be approaching a plateau.

Thierry Wizman, global FX and rates strategist at Macquarie Group, noted that the upcoming data is unlikely to trigger immediate hawkish action from the Fed. Adding to this sentiment, analysts at DZ Bank pointed to the term premium on 10-year Treasurys, which sits at 91 basis points—the highest level since 2014. This metric, combined with a recalibration of interest-rate expectations, suggests that the upward pressure on yields remains bounded for the near term.
