Coinbase Calls for Early Quantum Defense Planning for Bitcoin

With approximately 5% of all Bitcoin in its custody, Coinbase is urging the developer community to initiate a multi-year transition toward quantum-resistant security. The exchange warns that while no immediate threat exists, the cryptographic foundations of Bitcoin require proactive upgrades before quantum computing capabilities mature.

Coinbase Calls for Early Quantum Defense Planning for Bitcoin

The technical paper published on October 13 highlights that Bitcoin currently relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, specifically ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. These systems are theoretically vulnerable to advanced quantum computers capable of deriving private keys from public ones. Coinbase argues that the industry must move beyond theoretical discussions to address transaction fees, network capacity, and the complex logistics of wallet compatibility.

To facilitate this shift, the company is advocating for flexible designs like BIP-360 and P2TRv2, which could allow for the integration of post-quantum signature algorithms without necessitating a total overhaul of the network's structure. Proposed approaches include hybrid wallets that support both legacy signatures and new quantum-resistant authentication methods, providing a path for users to secure assets without waiting for a final industry-wide consensus on inactive or lost coins. Coinbase emphasizes that the debate over how to handle dormant or inaccessible holdings should remain separate from the essential engineering work required to harden the network against future cryptographic risks.
