U.S. Corn Exports Surge Toward Top of Market Expectations

U.S. corn export sales reached 1.12 million metric tons for the week ending October 8, landing at the upper threshold of analyst forecasts. While the Department of Agriculture reported robust figures for corn, the broader agricultural export landscape showed signs of hesitation as market participants weighed overall demand.

U.S. Corn Exports Surge Toward Top of Market Expectations

The latest USDA data confirms that corn sales for the 2026-27 marketing year significantly outperformed other grains. In comparison, soybean sales reached 574,900 tons, while wheat trailed at 319,900 tons. These figures sit within the ranges projected by analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal, though the wider market sentiment remains cautious. Doug Bergman of RCM Alternatives characterized the week as largely lackluster, noting that while corn held its ground, the performance of other major crops proved disappointing.

Bolstering the corn numbers, the USDA confirmed additional flash sales, including 127,000 tons destined for Japan. China also remains a critical player, securing 558,000 tons of soybeans, with an additional 236,000 tons sold to unknown destinations. Despite these specific transactions, the Chicago Board of Trade signaled immediate market skepticism. In premarket trading Friday, most-active futures for corn and soybeans dipped 0.4%, while wheat prices retreated by 1.1%.
