Ripple Prime launches 24/7 derivatives as HSBC flags liquidity risks

Institutional brokerage Ripple Prime has introduced 24/7 perpetual swaps tied to over 100 stocks, commodities, and currencies, allowing firms to trade assets like gold and oil during weekend hours. Despite the expansion, analysts warn that thin market liquidity may hinder large-scale institutional adoption for significant position management.

The service enables institutional clients to trade swaps linked to perpetual futures listed on Hyperliquid, effectively extending exposure to traditional markets beyond their standard operating hours. By utilizing the RLUSD stablecoin as collateral, firms can manage risk across diverse asset classes within a unified brokerage framework. Michael Higgins, international CEO of Ripple Prime, noted the infrastructure is specifically tailored for investors seeking continuous equity and commodity exposure. Trading firm Virtu has already adopted the platform, marking a significant step in Ripple’s strategy to integrate into traditional financial derivatives.

HSBC remains cautious regarding the immediate impact of these offerings. In an October 20 research note, Daragh Maher, head of digital assets research, characterized the service as an evolutionary step that currently lacks the depth required for major institutional maneuvers. The core concern centers on the ability of the market to absorb large trades without triggering extreme price volatility. Recent weekend episodes, where leveraged positions saw rapid liquidations during periods of thin underlying market activity, underscore the potential risks for institutional participants. While the brokerage provides operational flexibility, HSBC suggests that until liquidity matures, the service will likely appeal primarily to proprietary trading firms and hedge funds rather than broad institutional investors.
