Tether Backs Mural as AI Agents Enter the Financial System

Tether has spearheaded a $15 million Series A round for Mural, a New York-based fintech firm building infrastructure to facilitate financial transactions for autonomous software. The capital injection brings the startup’s total funding to $28 million, signaling a push to integrate AI agents into global banking and payment networks.

Tether Backs Mural as AI Agents Enter the Financial System

Founded in 2022 by former Palantir engineers Sinclair Toffa and Chris Fernandes, Mural provides the technical plumbing for companies to manage accounts, regulatory compliance, and cross-border payments. The platform currently supports major clients including Deel, Opera, and Axexo, handling transactions across 128 countries. Since introducing its API in 2025, the company has processed $2.1 billion in payments, with volume in 2026 already tracking at nearly six times the previous year’s total.

This investment highlights a shift toward enabling software to act as independent financial participants. Mural’s infrastructure allows businesses to set granular controls, such as spending limits and counterparty approvals, for AI-initiated transactions. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino noted that as agents begin moving capital, reliable bridges between traditional banking, stablecoins, and compliance systems become a critical utility. Mural plans to deploy the new funds to scale its international operations and further refine the tools required for autonomous agents to interact with the global financial system.
