Brad Gerstner proposes massive expansion of Trump Accounts

Investor Brad Gerstner is lobbying to extend Trump Accounts—currently limited to minors—to every American citizen under the age of 40. The proposal, which Gerstner intends to move through Congress within months, seeks to transform the existing tax-advantaged vehicles into a broader tool for private and corporate wealth contributions.

The expansion would shift the program from a childhood savings initiative into a widespread financial infrastructure. While current accounts offer a $1,000 federal seed contribution for children born between 2025 and 2028, the proposed adult model would function primarily as a vessel for employers and philanthropists. Gerstner noted that the government would not necessarily be required to provide upfront funding for the older demographic, allowing private capital to fill the void.

High-profile backers have already signaled interest in the platform. Elon Musk recently proposed donating SpaceX stock to every American child, a gesture valued at roughly $11.5 billion. Other notable supporters include Ray Dalio and Michael and Susan Dell. Despite the momentum, the legislation faces significant hurdles in Washington, where lawmakers have yet to weigh the long-term fiscal impact or the potential for new federal matching mandates. Gerstner remains optimistic, citing the existing bipartisan precedent set by the SECURE 2.0 law as a blueprint for future legislative success.
