U.S. Natural Gas Surplus Narrows as Storage Injections Slow

For the tenth consecutive week, U.S. natural gas storage injections are expected to fall below historical norms, tightening the national supply buffer. Analysts surveyed anticipate a 77 billion cubic foot increase for the week ending October 16, a figure that would further diminish the surplus against the five-year average.

The projected addition of 77 Bcf would bring total domestic inventories to 3,644 Bcf, according to a consensus of 11 industry experts. While estimates from brokers and traders fluctuate between 67 Bcf and 83 Bcf, the median expectation remains well below the 87 Bcf average recorded for this specific week between 2021 and 2025.

This sustained trend of smaller-than-average builds is actively eroding the national storage cushion. If the data aligns with these forecasts, the surplus over the five-year average will shrink to 35 Bcf, down from 45 Bcf the previous week. The U.S. Energy Information Administration will confirm these figures when it releases its official report on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
