Investors Flee AI Stocks as Spending Fears Hit Tech Market

A sharp sell-off swept through U.S. technology markets as investors questioned the sustainability of massive artificial intelligence infrastructure spending. The Nasdaq Composite plummeted 2.6 percent, marking its steepest decline since June, while capital shifted rapidly into the perceived safety of government bonds as enthusiasm for tech valuations cooled.

Meta Platforms led the retreat, dropping 7 percent after revealing billions in additional capital commitments alongside a profit miss. The contagion spread quickly through the sector, dragging the PHLX Semiconductor index down 6.7 percent. Nvidia, SpaceX, and CoreWeave shares all suffered, reflecting broader anxiety regarding the capital-intensive nature of AI development. Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang noted that the industry currently lacks sufficient capital to fully support the rapid expansion of neoclouds—the infrastructure providers powering hyperscalers like Amazon and Meta.

Market participants are recalibrating their exposure, seeking shelter in Treasury markets. The yield on the 10-year note dipped below 5 percent for the first time in a month, recording its most significant single-day drop in two years. Meanwhile, the two-year Treasury yield saw its largest decline in over a year, shedding 0.188 percentage points to 4.635 percent. Analyst Louis Navellier observed that the market is currently liquidating positions indiscriminately, driven by the uncertainty surrounding Meta’s aggressive expenditure path.
