Nasdaq Prepares 23-Hour Trading as Tokenized Assets Signal Price Trends

As Nasdaq prepares to launch a 23-hour weekday trading session this December, fresh IMF data suggests tokenized equities already serve as reliable price indicators. While crypto exchanges advocate for continuous markets to capture global demand, institutional analysts remain skeptical about whether U.S. investors will migrate from highly liquid conventional exchanges.

Nasdaq Prepares 23-Hour Trading as Tokenized Assets Signal Price Trends

The IMF’s October Global Financial Stability Report found that 87% to 99% of overnight tokenized equity movements mirrored conventional stock performance within five minutes of the opening bell. Bitfinex, which champions these 24/7 venues, argues that such data proves blockchain markets capture essential price signals while Wall Street remains dormant. Jesse Knutson, head of operations at Bitfinex Securities, noted that restricted hours often force risk into volatile bursts at the market open rather than mitigating it.

Despite this, structural hurdles persist. Nasdaq’s planned December 6 rollout hinges on infrastructure readiness and regulatory approvals, with the exchange opting to retain daily maintenance breaks and weekend closures. Meanwhile, institutional adoption remains measured; Morgan Stanley recently pushed its tokenized equity project to early 2027, citing a need for further product development. TD Cowen analysts further warned that tokenized platforms currently struggle with thin liquidity, potentially leading to unfavorable execution compared to the deeply integrated U.S. equity markets.
