MEXC retreats from Netherlands and restricts Russia and Belarus

Cryptocurrency exchange MEXC is winding down operations in the Netherlands following a sharp regulatory warning from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets. The platform confirmed it lacks the necessary MiCA authorization to operate within the European Union, forcing a phased exit for its Dutch user base.

MEXC retreats from Netherlands and restricts Russia and Belarus

The Dutch regulator flagged MEXC on September 24, 2025, after discovering the exchange promoted its services through local social media and conference sponsorships without proper registration. While the exchange’s general country guide points to November 16 as the final offboarding date, conflicting internal notices suggest some account groups face deadlines as early as October 31. The firm has yet to reconcile these dates, leaving customers to rely on individual account notifications.

Simultaneously, the exchange is tightening its global compliance footprint by restricting services in Russia and Belarus. Unlike the structured Dutch exit, these users are receiving individualized instructions for closing positions and withdrawing assets. MEXC has not cited specific sanctions for this move, framing it instead as part of broader efforts to align with international regulatory expectations.

These departures add to a growing list of 13 prohibited jurisdictions outlined in the exchange’s October 13 user agreement, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The platform maintains that the use of virtual private networks to circumvent these geographic restrictions is a violation of its terms, which may result in the forced liquidation of open positions. For those unable to withdraw in time, MEXC suggests that remaining assets may eventually be transferred to a third-party custodian.
