Sony-backed Soneium to launch native token for entertainment IP

The Ethereum layer 2 network Soneium, a joint venture between Sony Group and Startale Group, has announced plans for a native ecosystem token dubbed SONEIUM. The move aims to anchor a new infrastructure for tokenized entertainment rights, spanning music, anime, and gaming royalties as the network scales its creative economy.

The project intends to bridge the gap between traditional media and blockchain by allowing creators to raise capital through intellectual property tokens. While a specific launch date and tokenomics remain undisclosed, the ecosystem currently supports over 250 applications. Soneium intends to utilize this native asset to streamline interactions between developers, fans, and copyright holders.

Central to this expansion is the introduction of the Soneium Portal, a dedicated interface for discovering and financing projects. The platform will leverage an "Onchain IP Architecture" designed to manage rights and royalty distribution automatically via smart contracts. Initial initiatives include a partnership with Super State Holdings to tokenize the character Moriusa, alongside efforts with DayOneDream to bring K-pop concert royalties onto the blockchain. Beyond individual assets, the network plans to introduce "IP Vaults" and "IP Bonds" to provide investors with indirect exposure to music catalogs and entertainment business revenue streams.
