Santander Faces Brazilian Volatility Ahead of Q3 Results

Following Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in the Brazilian presidential election, market attention shifts to Banco Santander’s exposure in its second-largest market. Investors are scrutinizing the Spanish lender’s Wednesday earnings report for clarity on how the political transition will impact the unit that provided 15% of its recent earnings.

Santander Faces Brazilian Volatility Ahead of Q3 Results

Analysts anticipate the bank will post total operating income of 16.09 billion euros for the third quarter, a notable climb from the 14.325 billion euros reported during the same period last year. Net profit is expected to reach 3.79 billion euros, up from 3.50 billion euros in the previous year's third quarter. While Santander shares rose 2% throughout the quarter, the stock has since retreated 10% from those highs.

The shift in Brazil’s political landscape complicates the outlook, as the market previously favored the pro-business policies expected from Flavio Bolsonaro. Beyond the regional uncertainty, UBS analysts maintain a constructive long-term view on the bank. Although restructuring costs and higher loan-loss provisions may create near-term pressure, the firm’s ongoing expansion in the United States serves as a critical counterbalance against macroeconomic headwinds and intensified competition in net interest income.
