UPS Faces Profit Pressure Despite Revenue Growth Ahead of Earnings

UPS is set to report third-quarter results Tuesday, with analysts anticipating a revenue climb to $22.27 billion. However, the Atlanta-based carrier faces a complicated bottom line, as rising fuel costs and shifting volume patterns threaten to dampen the profit gains expected from its ongoing corporate restructuring.

UPS Faces Profit Pressure Despite Revenue Growth Ahead of Earnings

Wall Street forecasts a profit of $1.36 billion for the quarter, a marginal increase over last year's $1.31 billion. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share are projected to hit $1.62, falling short of the $1.74 reported during the same period in 2023. With the stock down 12% over the last three months to $100.60, investor scrutiny remains high regarding the company’s ability to stabilize its margins.

Management is currently pushing a major overhaul of its operating model, underscored by the recent promotions of Nando Cesarone to chief global operations officer and Matt Guffey to chief U.S. domestic officer. These shifts are central to the company’s transition from a standard package carrier to an integrated logistics provider. The strategy includes aggressive cost-cutting measures, such as reducing delivery roles and scaling back services for e-commerce giants like Amazon.

While Evercore analysts point to improved retail sales and stronger Chinese exports as potential tailwinds for revenue, the outlook remains guarded. Lower volume run rates resulting from the Amazon contract reductions continue to drag on performance. Analysts warn that because much of the revenue growth is tied to fuel surcharges, the actual earnings benefit is limited, leaving operating leverage under significant pressure.
