The Stripe Pay tool facilitates transfers directly through the Stripe Dashboard or a command-line interface. To initiate a payment, both the sender and the recipient must maintain active financial accounts linked to a Stripe profile. Users can identify recipients via unique tags, such as @recipient, or by searching the company’s business directory to locate verified matches. To mitigate the risk of erroneous transfers, the system includes a dry-run feature that allows users to confirm the amount, currency, and recipient credentials before authorizing the final movement of funds.
Company CEO Patrick Collison noted that account-to-account (A2A) payments are poised to eclipse person-to-person transfers in long-term strategic importance. While this new plug-in operates independently of Stripe’s existing stablecoin and AI-agent financial products, it represents a broader push to modernize business infrastructure. The company is simultaneously developing specialized tools for AI software agents, including programmable wallets and virtual cards, designed to handle automated tasks like invoice payments and balance inquiries. These initiatives, supported by acquisitions like Bridge and Privy, underscore Stripe's commitment to building a unified ecosystem for both traditional currency and digital assets.
