New Zealand Dollar Slides as RBNZ Defies Tightening Expectations

The decision caught investors off guard, effectively dismantling bets for a third consecutive hike and signaling that policymakers are moving away from a predetermined tightening cycle.

The central bank’s move prompted an immediate repricing in financial markets, with traders stripping a full rate hike from the overnight index swap curve. According to StoneX market analyst David Scutt, the probability of a 25-basis-point increase in December now sits at 80%. While the RBNZ committee remains hawkish and suggests further hikes are likely necessary, this marks the second time in a row the bank has delivered a dovish surprise, complicating the outlook for the currency.

Patrick Munnelly of Tickmill Group noted that the RBNZ’s decision serves as a reminder that central banks are reclaiming flexibility amidst complex economic pressures. By choosing to pause, policymakers highlighted a willingness to prioritize optionality when faced with the friction between supply-side energy inflation and real-economy headwinds. The Kiwi last traded at US$0.5597, hovering near critical support levels as traders look toward upcoming policy decisions from the Federal Reserve and other global central banks.
