HF Sinclair Eyes Profit Boost from Deepening Canadian Crude Discounts

With Western Canadian Select trading at a significant discount of $25 to $30 below West Texas Intermediate, HF Sinclair plans to capitalize on the price spread. Chief Operating Officer Steven Ledbetter confirmed the company is leveraging its refinery capacity to process cheaper, heavy Canadian feedstocks through at least 2027.

The Dallas-based refiner currently processes a total throughput of 678,000 barrels per day across its seven facilities in the Midcontinent and Pacific Northwest. Ledbetter noted that these sites possess the technical capability to handle over 100,000 barrels per day of heavy crude. The company expects the current price gap to persist for several years, driven by ongoing pipeline bottlenecks and elevated global tanker freight rates stemming from Middle East instability.

Operational efficiency remains a priority to capture these margins. The 165,000 b/d El Dorado refinery in Kansas is nearing the completion of turnaround maintenance, including a vacuum tower furnace upgrade designed to increase heavy crude yield by an additional 10,000 barrels per day. Beyond refining, management signaled a focus on organic growth and the expansion of its Green Trail Fuels joint venture, which currently supplies 30 retail sites across Colorado and New Mexico.
