Binance Begins $6.3 Billion Buyback Following Massive Security Breach

Binance has launched a wide-scale effort to replace $6.3 billion in stolen digital assets, tapping into its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate reserves to restore customer balances. The exchange is currently purchasing matching quantities of tokens to mitigate the impact of an October 29 security breach linked to North Korean hackers.

The exchange currently holds $5 billion in the affected tokens, leaving the remainder to be acquired through public exchanges and over-the-counter trading desks. Co-founder Yi He confirmed that the company is utilizing its existing holdings of Bitcoin and Ethereum to fund these repurchases, though specific details regarding the volume of asset sales remain undisclosed. While the firm works to stabilize its reserves, investigators have identified the North Korean cybercrime group TraderTraitor as the primary suspect behind the exploit.

Chainalysis reports that the attackers engaged in sophisticated laundering patterns, including the rapid conversion of stablecoins into Ethereum and the use of automated wallets to obfuscate fund movements. Despite the scale of the theft, Binance maintains that it can cover the losses independently, even after its Thai partner, Gulf, offered supplemental liquidity support. The exchange has successfully frozen $3 billion in assets through coordination with law enforcement and token issuers, while the remaining balance continues to be addressed through market-wide recovery efforts.
