Bitcoin Struggles as $6.3 Billion Binance Breach Rattles Markets

Bitcoin dipped below $77,000 following a massive security breach at Binance that saw an estimated $6.3 billion in assets compromised. With the exchange scrambling to secure its reserves, traders are now closely watching the $76,200 support level to see if the market can reclaim the $80,000 threshold.

Bitcoin Struggles as $6.3 Billion Binance Breach Rattles Markets

Blockaid investigators traced at least $3.5 billion exiting Binance hot wallets across four blockchains within a single hour. The attacker reportedly reprogrammed a major Ethereum hot wallet, allowing a single operator to drain existing funds and new deposits. While initial reports pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, Binance officials have since indicated the attack was significantly more complex, involving advance rehearsals and multiple points of failure.

Market participants are assessing whether the exchange can maintain liquidity and prevent a broader contagion. Nansen data shows that some stolen stablecoins were funneled into the Aave protocol to borrow ETH, while other assets were swapped through decentralized exchanges. Although Binance has set aside over $6.3 billion in company funds to address the shortfall, experts warn that reimbursement capacity does not automatically solve the operational risks that trigger withdrawal freezes. Lacie Zhang of Bitget Wallet noted that sustained spot demand is necessary to stabilize the price, as any prolonged restriction on withdrawals could prompt lenders and market makers to retreat, further straining market depth.
