Corporate Bitcoin Treasuries Face Financing Risks as Dividend Costs Rise

With 180 listed firms now controlling 1.3 million BTC, Bitfinex analysts warn that the aggressive financing strategies used to fund these acquisitions may be nearing a breaking point. As companies lean on discounted preferred shares to fuel their buying, investor demand for higher yields could force liquidations to cover dividend obligations.

MicroStrategy currently anchors this corporate accumulation, holding 848,517 BTC—roughly two-thirds of the total tracked by SatsIntel. To stabilize the volatility inherent in their capital structures, both MicroStrategy and Strive have pivoted toward frequent dividend distributions. MicroStrategy’s recent approval of daily dividends follows a trend of shortening payment cycles, a move CEO Phong Le claims will mitigate the price dips typically seen around ex-dividend dates. Despite these efforts, the market remains skeptical; MicroStrategy’s STRC shares closed at $99.34 on October 29, failing to reclaim their $100 face value.

Strive is simultaneously testing investor appetite through its SATA and SATS securities. The company recently raised $630 million by selling SATS shares at $90, a discount that underscores the challenge of maintaining capital inflows. While Strive added 6,182 BTC to its treasury between October 17 and October 23, the reliance on external financing to fund these purchases creates a precarious loop. Should the discount on preferred shares widen, the increased cost of capital could effectively halt the acquisition cycle. Bitfinex analysts caution that if these securities lose their appeal, companies may find themselves under significant pressure to sell their underlying Bitcoin holdings to satisfy mandatory dividend payments.
