Crypto Points Programs Face User Backlash Over Opacity

Users are increasingly questioning the viability of crypto points programs as developers face mounting criticism over opaque reward structures and delayed payouts. With participants committing significant capital and fees for undefined future benefits, the model is being dismissed by some as an anti-signal that risks alienating the very communities it aims to build.

Crypto Points Programs Face User Backlash Over Opacity

Pseudonymous commentator Nairolf ignited the debate on November 2, arguing that while points are effective for bootstrapping early-stage projects, the current lack of transparency creates unsustainable expectations. By withholding information on token allocation and conversion rates, projects exploit user activity without offering concrete guarantees. Research from Galaxy in July 2024 underscored this issue, noting that points often function as proprietary scores controlled entirely by issuers rather than blockchain-based claims to assets.

The tension stems from conflicting incentives. Teams benefit from immediate engagement and trading volume, while users endure the uncertainty of delayed airdrops. This creates a cycle where developers postpone launches to maintain growth, ultimately eroding trust. Crypto.com researchers previously warned that this imbalance often leads to community backlash, as points themselves fail to generate the long-term product demand necessary for project survival.

Recent shifts, such as the KAST payments app move to discontinue points by November 30, highlight the volatility of these rewards. KAST intends to replace points with nontradable units that lack voting rights or guaranteed cash value, leaving some users with limited spending vouchers instead of anticipated tokens. To mitigate these risks, industry observers suggest a move toward day-one token issuance, where supply, distribution, and transferability conditions are disclosed before users commit their capital.
