Hong Kong Unveils Institutional Gold Token for Interbank Settlement

Hong Kong is set to introduce a digital token backed by standard 400-ounce gold bars, marking a significant shift in the city’s blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui Ching-yu announced the initiative during Hong Kong FinTech Week, signaling a focus on institutional interbank trading.

The proposed token will utilize the city’s HAU gold price reference to facilitate large-scale transactions between banks and professional traders. Unlike existing retail-facing assets such as PAXG or XAUT, which allow for fractional ownership of single troy ounces, this project focuses on the institutional market where 400-ounce bars are the industry standard. While the government has confirmed the project will operate under the umbrella of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble, officials have yet to disclose the specific issuer, custodian, or blockchain architecture involved.

This move complements a broader strategy to modernize commodity trading, including a central clearing system for over-the-counter gold transactions slated for 2027. Recent pilot programs have already demonstrated the feasibility of these technologies; notably, a transaction involving Zhaojin Mining and China Construction Bank (Asia) successfully used tokenized bank deposits to settle gold trades. While the city continues to integrate tokenized assets into its settlement infrastructure, authorities have not confirmed if the upcoming 400-ounce gold token will eventually be accessible to individual investors or remain strictly within the interbank ecosystem.
