Arthur Hayes warns of AI-driven market contagion

A deluge of shares hitting public markets from AI giants like Anthropic and SpaceX could trigger a liquidity crunch, according to BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes. He argues that massive investor dilution and cooling tech valuations may drain dollar reserves, creating short-term turbulence for Bitcoin before central banks eventually pivot.

Arthur Hayes warns of AI-driven market contagion

In his latest essay, "D is for Dilution," Hayes outlines a scenario where the influx of shares following IPOs overwhelms market demand. Specifically, he estimates that early Anthropic investors could face 83% dilution by June 2027 as lock-up periods expire. While these figures are projections based on registration statements rather than confirmed new equity issuance, the sheer volume of potential supply necessitates a massive, sustained capital injection to prevent price erosion.

This cooling sentiment in the AI sector threatens to tighten credit conditions. As technology stocks face pressure, lenders are likely to demand higher yields, increasing borrowing costs for the infrastructure-heavy AI industry. Hayes notes that if banks grow wary of the sector, the resulting contraction in credit could stifle dollar liquidity, leaving speculative assets like Bitcoin vulnerable. His firm, Maelstrom, has opted to remain on the sidelines until these macro conditions stabilize.

Despite the immediate risks, Hayes maintains a bullish long-term outlook for digital assets. He anticipates that a severe financing crisis within the AI sector would eventually force central banks to loosen monetary policy. Such an intervention would likely expand the money supply, providing the liquidity needed to fuel a potential rally in Bitcoin. For now, the investor is prioritizing capital preservation, waiting for clear signals that the current market volatility has bottomed out.
