Cardano Advances van Rossem Upgrade to Mainnet Governance

With 4.44 billion ADA in backing, the Cardano network has officially entered the governance phase for the van Rossem hard fork. Submitted on June 16 during Epoch 637, the proposal seeks to implement Protocol Version 11, marking a significant milestone in the blockchain's ongoing transition toward the Dijkstra era.

Cardano Advances van Rossem Upgrade to Mainnet Governance

The van Rossem upgrade functions as an intra-era hard fork, a design choice intended to minimize disruption for stake pool operators, exchanges, and decentralized applications. Unlike a full era transition, this approach allows for the integration of technical improvements while maintaining stability within the current environment. Infrastructure preparation followed extensive testing cycles on the Preview and Preprod networks throughout the spring, culminating in the recent mainnet submission by the member-based organization Intersect.

This technical step serves as the foundation for the upcoming Dijkstra era, which is designed to eventually introduce the Leios scaling architecture to the mainnet. Beyond its technical scope, the upgrade honors Max van Rossem, a dedicated contributor and developer who passed away in October 2025. The name was formalized following a community vote that secured 83.62% support from delegated representatives. The proposal metadata now contains a permanent dedication to his contributions as a builder and delegate.

Governance participants face a structured timeline for ratification, with potential enactment dates spanning from late June through late July. The process requires approval from the Constitutional Committee and stake pool operators before the action expires on July 18. This deployment serves as a critical stress test for Cardano’s on-chain governance framework, which has recently navigated internal debates regarding treasury management and research funding.
