Base Restores Operations After Two-Hour Consensus Failure

Block production on the Coinbase-backed Base network ground to a halt Thursday after an invalid sequence disrupted consensus. The outage paralyzed on-chain activity for nearly two hours, forcing engineers to intervene before the network could resume normal processing at block 47,806,542, just hours before a major system upgrade.

Base Restores Operations After Two-Hour Consensus Failure

Base creator Jesse Pollak confirmed that user funds remained secure throughout the incident, though he characterized the downtime as unacceptable for a platform aiming to serve as a reliable foundation for global finance. While the team successfully patched the root cause and verified widespread recovery across the ecosystem, the event highlights the ongoing technical challenges facing major Ethereum scaling solutions.

Infrastructure providers and node operators were required to restart their systems to restore syncing once the primary sequencer resumed operation. This disruption occurred in the shadow of the Beryl upgrade, a planned deployment designed to accelerate withdrawal times from seven days to five and introduce a native token standard for assets like stablecoins. As Base becomes increasingly critical for institutional applications, including payment settlements, the pressure to maintain constant uptime remains a significant hurdle for its development team. A full post-mortem is expected to address how the invalid block bypassed initial safeguards and what architectural changes will be implemented to prevent future recurrences.
