Jeff Rowe Exits Syngenta as COO Hengde Qin Steps Into Top Role

Jeff Rowe, a fifth-generation Illinois farmer who steered Syngenta through a volatile agricultural market, will step down as chief executive on August 1. The company confirmed that Hengde Qin, currently the chief operating officer and former head of its China business, will assume the top position.

Rowe’s departure follows a tenure marked by the cancellation of a high-profile initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, a decision he attributed to prevailing industry headwinds. Despite these pressures, the Switzerland-based chemical giant, a subsidiary of the state-owned ChemChina, recently reported a 2% year-over-year increase in sales alongside improved adjusted profit margins.

Qin brings a deep background in the company's financial and Chinese operations to the role, having previously led Syngenta’s seeds business and served as chief financial officer. His appointment arrives as the firm continues to navigate its identity as a major U.S. pesticide supplier with significant Chinese ownership. During his time at the helm, Rowe focused on bridging the divide between corporate interests and American growers, often emphasizing his own roots in Princeton, Illinois, to temper political scrutiny regarding the company’s foreign ownership structure. Following his exit, Rowe intends to return to his family farm to resume work on his corn and soybean acreage.
