These international actions broaden an existing legal front in New Jersey, where Arbutus continues to pursue claims regarding five U.S. patents. The company alleges that Pfizer and BioNTech improperly utilized its proprietary lipid nanoparticle delivery method to develop their high-profile vaccines.
Simultaneously, Arbutus has resolved its separate litigation with Moderna. The company confirmed it received $178 million earlier this month as part of a settlement agreement. Following this influx of capital, Arbutus plans to initiate a shareholder return program in the third quarter, authorizing common share repurchases of up to $230 million.
