Coinbase Integrates Hyperliquid for High-Leverage Trading on Base App

Coinbase has expanded its Base App capabilities by integrating Hyperliquid, enabling users to trade over 290 perpetual contract markets with up to 50x leverage. This move marks a strategic shift for the platform, which is moving away from failed social-feature experiments to prioritize high-demand financial derivatives and trading infrastructure.

The integration routes perpetual orders directly through Hyperliquid’s on-chain protocol, allowing users to manage positions without exiting their existing wallets. Head of Engineering Chintan Turakhia characterized the move as a response to user demand, noting that perpetual contracts currently account for approximately 75% of global cryptocurrency trading volume. The available markets span Bitcoin, Ethereum, and various commodities, alongside synthetic stock-linked assets that provide price exposure without granting ownership or voting rights.

While the integration streamlines access, it introduces significant liquidation risks inherent to high-leverage positions. Coinbase has clarified that positions may be closed automatically if collateral levels fall below maintenance thresholds. Despite the expansion, the product remains strictly unavailable to users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada due to local regulatory restrictions on leveraged derivatives. This exclusion separates the new offering from Coinbase’s existing, CFTC-regulated futures services available to American customers. The pivot follows an internal realization that previous efforts to gamify the app through social feeds and creator tokens failed to gain traction, prompting a return to an "Everything Exchange" model focused on trading volume and financial utility.
