Bhutan Shifts $32.7 Million in Bitcoin Amid Ongoing Sell-Off Concerns

The Royal Government of Bhutan moved 490.87 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $32.74 million, to fresh, unidentified wallets over the past 24 hours. This transfer adds to a mounting series of movements from state-linked addresses that have characterized the kingdom's digital asset strategy throughout 2026.

Bhutan Shifts $32.7 Million in Bitcoin Amid Ongoing Sell-Off Concerns

Blockchain analytics platform Onchain Lens reported that the bulk of this movement, totaling 485 BTC, occurred in a single transaction. While these funds originated from wallets tagged as belonging to the Royal Government of Bhutan, the destination addresses remain unlinked to known exchanges or trading firms. Consequently, market observers remain divided on whether these transfers represent actual liquidations or simple internal reallocations of the state's sovereign holdings.

This activity follows a pattern established earlier this year, with significant outflows recorded throughout the spring and summer. By May, state-linked BTC outflows for 2026 had already surpassed $230 million. Previous movements have occasionally been traced to major industry players like Binance, Galaxy Digital, and QCP Capital, though many transactions—like the most recent one—land in opaque, newly created wallets.

Bhutan’s Bitcoin position was built primarily through state-backed mining operations leveraging the country’s abundant hydroelectric energy. At its peak in October 2024, the kingdom held over 13,000 BTC, positioning it as one of the world's most significant sovereign holders. However, recent data suggests these holdings have diminished as the government integrates Bitcoin into the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City. The city recently appointed digital asset manager 3iQ to oversee portions of its treasury, signaling that while the government continues to move large sums, it is simultaneously formalizing its long-term institutional approach to digital assets.
