Anonymous Bitcoin user hides private key puzzle in Genesis Block data

An unidentified user embedded a 255-byte message into block 963,629 on August 22, claiming to have derived a private key from the data within Satoshi Nakamoto’s original Genesis Block. The transaction, identified by Galaxy Research, invites the public to solve a security puzzle based on notoriously low-entropy inputs.

The message, stored in an OP_RETURN output, asserts that the wallet's private key material was generated using information from Bitcoin's inaugural block, mined on January 3, 2009. The creator explicitly stated that the entropy is "extremely low" and that no external backup was required, as every necessary component existed within the public data of the Genesis Block. While the claim has sparked interest, there is no verified evidence that the puzzle has been solved or that the associated funds have been moved.

Galaxy Research noted that the transaction, which cost 250 satoshis, qualifies as an "oversized" data output. The Genesis Block contains several publicly available values—including a specific timestamp, a nonce, and the famous newspaper headline regarding bank bailouts—any of which could theoretically serve as a derivation input. However, without the creator's specific transformation formula, the challenge remains a theoretical exercise. Until a valid transaction signed by the corresponding private key appears on-chain, the puzzle serves as a permanent, immutable record of a claim rather than a proven recovery of Satoshi-era secrets.
