Stablecoin Expansion Strains 24/7 Foreign Exchange Liquidity

The proliferation of local-currency stablecoins is forcing a reckoning in global finance, as the promise of round-the-clock settlement collides with the reality of fragmented liquidity. TransFi CEO Raj Kamal warns that without deep, reliable currency markets, the shift to onchain payments could create significant cost volatility for corporate treasuries.

Stablecoin Expansion Strains 24/7 Foreign Exchange Liquidity

While blockchain networks operate continuously, the underlying foreign exchange markets remain tethered to traditional banking hours and regional trading sessions. Currently, over 70% of conversions into dollar-denominated stablecoins originate outside the U.S. dollar, highlighting a persistent demand for currency exchange. As banks and fintechs launch tokens pegged to the euro, yen, and sterling, this activity is increasingly moving onchain. However, Kamal argues that token issuance alone does not guarantee the depth required to execute large-scale corporate transactions during weekends or off-peak hours.

Market makers face a complex balance-sheet challenge: they must decide how much currency inventory to hold and what risk premiums to charge when liquidity is thin. This creates a scenario where a transaction might settle in seconds, yet carry a material price penalty due to the lack of available counterparties. Consequently, corporate treasuries are likely to favor established, highly liquid payment routes, potentially concentrating activity among a few dominant stablecoins rather than the growing list of new issuers. As global institutions like Bank of America and Citi explore joint issuance ventures, the focus is shifting from simple token creation to the necessity of robust redemption systems, cross-network connectivity, and integrated foreign exchange liquidity.
