Investors Snap Up 30-Year Gilts Despite Debt and Inflation Risks

Orders topped 85 billion pounds for a 4.25 billion pound issuance of 30-year U.K. government bonds on Tuesday, signaling robust market confidence. The sale, priced at a 5.8168% yield, suggests that institutional appetite for long-dated debt remains resilient even as concerns over fiscal expansion and rising inflation persist globally.

Investors Snap Up 30-Year Gilts Despite Debt and Inflation Risks

The successful syndication—the first for this maturity since May 2025—comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey work to reassure markets. By pledging to uphold strict fiscal rules in the upcoming budget, the government has successfully curbed investor anxiety regarding potential spending slippage. Mizuho strategist Evelyne Gomez-Liechti noted that the commitment points toward a tighter fiscal stance, which has helped gilts outperform their eurozone counterparts in recent sessions.

Despite this positive reception, the broader environment remains challenging. With national debt hovering near 94% of annual economic output and the budget deficit projected at 4% of GDP, long-dated bonds face structural pressure. Yields hit a multiyear peak of 5.921% on September 2, reflecting the extra premium investors now demand to hold government paper. While Tuesday’s auction saw strong participation, market strategists warn that the combination of persistent inflation and an increasing global supply of debt will likely keep yields elevated for the foreseeable future.
